How do I become more handy?

For basic tools, you might be best off getting a set of Husky tools. I got mine with a rolling toolbox and they were very inexpensive as a set. Individually they'd be a lot more. A good basic set might be a ratcheting screwdriver with interchangeable heads, channel locks, hammer, tool box saw, tape measure, etc. Like this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/ANVIL-3-8-in-Drive-SAE-and-Metric-Homeowners-Tool-Set-137-Piece-A137HOS/303117305.

You can always add on but this would get you started for a small investment. Their hand tools are 100% guaranteed for life too.
