How do I become more ruthlessly competitive?

I said it's mostly a zero sum game and it is. If you're competing for your career, business, or even love there is only so much to go around.

If life wasn't a zero sum game then everyone would be working in their first choice career. Also so what if there is more money being generated? That doesn't transfer directly into guarantying the success you want no matter how hard you work.

For every job you get, every business sale you make, every relationship you are in there were others that were trying to get the same ones you got as well and they lost.

You know the male population in China is about 20-30 million higher than the female population due to the old one child policy? How do you propose those 20-30 million men that want to find love overcome this issue? They can't because there just isn't enough potential partners for them. They win or lose directly in correlation with someone else losing or winning. In the end China will end up with millions of men that weren't able to find love.
