How is being on-call still a thing?

amazon is not an easy place and it is not for the weak. i am not sure if you have thought about the implications what you are saying right now. what you are doing right now is signaling and broadcasting your weakness. and amazon is not a place where you want to show weakness.

what you should be focused on is how you can optimize your process in order to solve the issue faster. you should also be thinking about what you can do to mitigate these sev-2s from happening in the first place. what you should be showing is initiative to face the challenge, not running away from it. you are exhibiting traits that are not considered positive at amazon.

it is also possible that amazon is not for you. specific type of people thrive at amazon (and i'm sure you can tell already what type) and if you are not one of those then your career will be stalled. really think hard about if this is the right place for you if you can't handle on-call.

you have two choices: suck it up and rise up to the challenge. or tell your manager that you can't handle what everyone else in the company handles and you need special treatment. two engineers were fired from my team in the past 6 months (including one during a pandemic), so please consider my brutally harsh but honest advice carefully.

welcome to amazon. it's hell.
