The White Knights Strike Back: A Star Citizen Story

Last week CIG very understandably and reasonably gutted and removed their roadmap for developing the 10 year old alpha Star Citizen because backers were complaining too much about missed deadlines. Which is fair, I mean the deadlines are for selling ships – they are not a promise. This subreddit already had a very illuminating thread about these unreasonable complaints, but I feel that is not representative of the Star Citizen community. So I wanted to share with you a selection of the greatest hits from the last week:

*The reaction to the roadmap roundup has only proven CIGs point and I am beyond disgusted. Grow the fuck up.

*I have been so tired of people complaining that CIG delays all the time and then shocked pikachu face every time something gets moved or delayed. And it's the same people. Every. Single. Week. So yeah them getting rid of everything on the release view patch the immediate patch was the right call

*Rest assured that harassing devs, and company management will eventually lead to a closed development schedule. We might still have ISC, but beyond that they might feel the need to protect their workers. So Chill.

• It might be painful for some - like ripping a band-aid off - but the Release View should never have been a thing in the first place. This change to the Roadmap is the correct call, and I commend CIG for making the hard decisions, because I know the internet is going to whine about it for a couple of days. And then forget about it. This is the new normal.

• Keep calm, and fly on [An attempt to explain why delays and roadmap gutting is normal]

• The roadmap, since it was announced is a marketing tool. Nothing more and nothing less. CIG uses it to build up several hypes. What actually comes to the next patch often is a very different thing compared to newly announced patches. One thing you can count on is: something will be there. And that's all it needs. You can take it as granted that they will deliver something towards the vision of Star Citizen. And that's what matters. Stop worrying.

• SC isn't a game, and you're not buying a game. Your buying into a mans dream. I knew that when I bought it and I am sorry to all that didn't. But stop spreading this negativity, you won't get the game one day sooner. I don't worry about any dates anymore CIG gives out, because I know they are pressured to do so. This game is gonna be ready when it's ready, probably the only game that can claim so, and I am okay with it. This is what you get when you buy SC. And if you thought otherwise then you are either delusional or simply misinformed.

• Simply put, CIG does more than any other game company in terms of transparency and since I've joined I've been so extremely happy with them. It's ok to be disappointed but be realistic and keep it all in perspective. This is an Alpha project with already more content than most similar titles out there and the updates will keep coming.

• the brigade is real. 90% of the complaint threads are just SC_Refund babies having their usually hissy fit. it's actually crazy how much effort these people put into hating a $45 video game LMAO. if you paid hundreds, or thousands of dollars for virtual spaceships and have buyers remorse, that's on you. Take responsibility for the purchase you made and move on like an adult.

• This game is not GaaS, nor RDR2 or Cyberpunk 2077. It won't be finished in 10 years. It can't be. It's much, much larger in scope. Features will slip. Features will be cancelled. Things change. It's not even one game, its two games we're talking about. Made by a developer that has no previous structure like Rockstar or CDProjekt had...And then you have CR at the helm. He has a history. He's a dreamer, and his dreams require constant upgrades, moving goalposts, dynamic development.

• They can't tell you when new features are going to release beyond the next quarter, because they well and truly -- honestly -- do not know. How could they know? This thing is so fucking complicated, with insane inter-dependencies, that no one person can truly wrap their mind around all of it, and understand it to depth where they can answer the "when will it be finished" question.

• I work in software development, so I understand user disappointment over missed schedules, but the amount of bitching here has been unreal. If people are upset that features aren’t being released, I suggest you look at the jobs page at CIG. There are 128 open positions. Be the change you want to see!

• Before we get our pitchforks and riot, I do not think it is worth the time and effort to constantly bitch about delays and not meeting deadlines. There is a vision for this game. A dream. We are lucky enough to walk (or fly) in this dream. We all want this dream to be a reality. Chris Roberts will stop at nothing to make his dream come true.
