How Businesses Are Making Money Off Americans Getting Fatter

Haha, the banner picture is from the Heart Attack Grill in las Vegas. I went there recently and ordered a triple burger (triple bypass), which allegedly, according to the surgeon-scrubs dressed chef, had "8,000 calories". It certainly didn't have that many calories, at most it had 2,500 cals. Don't worry fitizens, I didn't eat it all (at least in part because I really wanted the naughty boy spanking for not cleaning my plate :). The place was fun but the burgers were less than mediocre / :(

The industries making the absolute most out of obesity are the food industry, the pharmaceutical industry and the industry that is health care.

The food industry, obviously, profits when people eat more of their food. They side-step whatever responsibility they might have to provide healthy food by pushing the message that obesity is an energy imbalance disorder, and not a disorder of unhealthy food ingredients. Unfortunately the funding of dietitians by The Coca Cola Company (who make much more than just drinks) is a real thing. The tobacco industry behaved the same way, until legislation forced them to inform people that their products were harmful. Average citizens then knew what they were getting in to, and acted accordingly.

The pharmaceutical industry has absolutely no problem making medications for illnesses such as diabetes or heart disease. They are in the business of curing, not preventing, which is probably good. The good turns to bad when the pill is worse than simply EATING FUCKING HEALTHILY.. I point a finger at drug companies for their attitude of "meh, if people don't eat rite they can always take a pill, yeah?". Well fuck that, pills are for medical disorders, not lifestyle disorders IMHO.

The health care industry loves to tell us about the multibillion dollars of burden added to our economy because of obesity. Not. These multibillions go to you, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, technicians, cleaners and everyone else who is paid to fix health problems. You may not like it, but you are sucking at the teat of an unhealthy society, and you don't want that milk of human obesity to run dry.

People, it's not difficult. Buy fresh fish, meat, vegetables. Make your own meals - or eat with friends who have cooked from scratch. Stop buying crap, starchy food designed to taste good. People are addicted to fast food! It's not all their own fault, they live in a toxic food environment paid for by taxpayers who fund politicians who in turn take money from corporate lobbyists.

The real message to fight obesity is not "Eat less move more and be less of a slob!". It is "Stop buying processed junk food designed to make you a lifelong customer"!

People of /r/fatlogic, rise up, the obesity epidemic is also about the manipulation of the public interest for profit by the few, it is a political arena and you are in the wrong bleachers!
