How can I find my purpose in life?

  1. Find out what's out there.

  2. Narrow down your interests.

  3. Pursue them further.

  4. Narrow down to one.

  5. Profit.

1 is by far the hardest. You don't want to be that guy who spends his whole life in accounting, being bored out of his mind, only to realize when he's 9682 and near death, that underwater basket weaving was his true passion all along do you? So go through a list of careers, maybe a few. Note down anything that catches your eye. This will take a few days, and some effort, but this is what you are going to be stuck with for the rest of your life, being thorough doesn't hurt.

Then you should take a look at Oxford's Very Short Introductions. These books are designed to be glorified Wikipedia articles. Read through them and you might find your academic flame. Or be completely bored out of your mind. It's 50/50. Do this, then apply to introductory courses on whatever interests you.
