How can I read books and increase my functional memory?

There was a book quite like that- two brothers. The had vastly different personalities, but the only "tag" i had for them in my head was that they were brothers.

When Simon talked i would think "oh ya, Simon is the brother." When Peter talked i'd go "oh ya, Peter was the brother." 30 minutes later i'd think back and i would have no idea which spoke.

If they were brother and sister, my mind would differentiate the two very well as long as the names were feminine or masculine. For example, if Amanda spoke, I would think "right, the sister"

Also, in my mind they look like a less detailed version of this. Imagine it having no definite joints or tummy.

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson was really hard to read because it started off with the main char having a large team. I want to read Way of the Kings because people say it's really good, but I'm afraid that I'll just get confused and it would ruin the book for me like what happened in Mistborn.
