How Canada’s intelligence agencies helped keep the country out of the 2003 Iraq war

When this whole shitstorm was going on, I couldn't help but wonder what a fantastic opportunity was missing, by not talking to Brian Mulroney and asking him if he could mediate between Bush and the UNSC/France. Mulroney would have been perfect for the job. He is a former PM, a well-respected conservative, someone who had a great working relationship with Ronald Reagan, a fantastic pedigree, someone who built his career as a mediator and a labor lawyer, and is fluently bilingual.

Imagine if Chretien had called up Mulroney and said, "Brian, I know we've had our differences, but as one PM to another, could you take a crack at negotiating a compromise between the US and the europeans, see if we can find a middle ground? Find a way to get all-NATO agreement on an intervention in Iraq, or a more comprehensive inspection regime that might satisfy Bush?"

There was a missed opportunity here. Mulroney could have delayed or possibly even prevented the 2003 war and could have ended up with the Nobel Peace Prize.
