How could an American look at a country where guns aren’t legal and not think it is better and safer for society?

Yes, I believe they are. But keep in mind that the vast, vast majority of Americans don't live in major cities like that. And, even for the ones who do, gun violence is not equally spread throughout the city.

To put things into context: If you take the 100 largest cities in the United States and combine all their populations, you're dealing with only 19.32% of the population. Gun violence is acute and, in general, affects very specific people and areas of the US. It is not widespread or an equal-opportunity offender in the way that traffic accidents are.
