Neither of us know what condition the kitchen is in so we don’t know how much “suffering” there actually is. You should support your son when he faces homophobia from your extended family. Even if it impacts you financially, that’s something you should be willing to do for your kid. In return, it keeps a good relationship with them, and then they can turn around and support you for these kitchen expenses in return for having their back. If OOP does nothing, she loses her son in return for a slightly more usable kitchen.
