How do I deal with extreme Death Anxiety?

Sartre would say you should think about death...not to depress you or provoke paralyzing fear in you...but to spur you to action. As someone who also has a great fear of death, it amazes me how quickly my mind turns from thoughts of death to some other topic. I cannot face it directly for any length of time.

This fear has made me realize why people choose religion to absolve them of their fear of dying...it makes you feel better to believe something comes after death. But I can't really accept this escape...

Life is short so get to living it as fully as you can. Think of the Shawshank Redemption..."Get busy living or get busy dying". That seems to be the popular answer to the problem of fear of dying. Do something, hopefully something constructive, to distract you from your fears and hopefully give you a sort of peace of mind.

I struggle with "the poison thoughts" (my name for thoughts of death) and/or recalling ugly images of death from years past. I deal with it everyday lately, some due to circumstances, and I don't think it's a battle I can win. I'd be happy with a cease-fire.

I take medication and it works to some extent. I also smoke marijuana which helps as well. Exercise is good too...jog/walk.
