How did countries support taking so many prisoners in WWII?

Just north of Michigan, the same deal in Ontario / Manitoba where I grew up (and the rest of Canada). POW camps dotted the forested areas and many POW's returned back to Canada after the war. Quite significant German populations all over. My relatives in Minnesota, which was had a large population of Germans to begin with, also reported numerous camps and finding distant relatives, with many returning later.

I would guess North America absorbed a great number of prisoners. Certainly they were escapes, but several interviewed enjoyed the life here, and had good relationships with the token guards (in Canada, armed with pistols and typically older or unfit for army duty).
