how did you learn to not be so much of a people pleaser?

You're acting like you're disagreeing with me but you're just giving examples of different kinds of people you can do things for.

I could do a good deed for my elderly but extremely wealthy neighbor.

I could do a good deed for child cancer patients.

I could do a good deed for a childhood bully.

I could do a good deed for an abusive partner.

I could do a good deed for my boss.

You could do all of these for the same reason, or each for different reasons, with various degrees of expectations of something in return. You and the other person are acting like because i gave one example of a reason not to do good deeds, that suddenly all other reasons for doing good deeds are out the window.

Just know yourself, know your boundaries, and be mentally healthy.
