How did/do you manage to build up a vinyl collection of your taste without spending a fortune?

I feel that the notion that vinyl is "expensive" and "hard to find" to be a greatly exaggerated. Additionally the notion that only "old classics" are available on vinyl is a complete fallacy. I will tackle each of these notions about vinyl one by one. It is not my goal to argue that “vinyl is better than digital” nor is it my intention to convince anyone to switch to vinyl. These are fools errands to say the least. I wish only to dispel common myths about vinyl.
Before I go any further allow me to state that I’m not even considering illegal / free downloads with regards to my arguments or views on vinyl. If this is how you choose to attain your tracks then yes Vinyl is "expensive" and "hard to find”.   So is Vinyl more expensive than digital? Fundamentally no it is not more expensive. As with most of my arguments for vinyl one has to consider the vast amounts of music available to you regardless of format. When you consider this then Vinyl is not more expensive and you will find it to be quite the opposite. All one has to do is do a simple search on Ebay for “vinyl lot” or “<insert preferred genre> vinyl lot> etc… and you will find many opportunities to pick up records for pennies on the dollar. Take into account thrift stores and other such establishments and you will see that you can pick up vinyl at bargain prices. I live in Dallas and we have a store called Josey Records that has a a significant portion of the shelf space dedicated to $1 & $2 records. Often time when the argument is made against vinyl these arguments limit themselves to only new pressings etc.. Yes a new EDM 12” with shipping costs is more “expensive” than the equivalent digital release. Though this is a rather limited view of vinyl prices. Also one has to consider that I have the option to sell my 12” second hand. There is no second hand market for digital releases.   Which leads us to the notion that “vinyl is “hard to find”. Even if you are unfortunate enough to live in an area where there are no brick and mortar establishment selling vinyl the sheer number of online retailers selling vinyl alone proves this to be a utterly wrong. If we were to limit ourselves to only EDM or “Dance” genres we can find with a modicum of effort many online retailers (which often have brick and mortar store fronts mind you) selling all manor of EDM 12” and LPs. If you claim you can’t find EDM vinyl in your given genre I would argue you’re simply not trying.   Finally the ultimate fallacy of them all: vinyl is only for “the old classics” or the old school genres. More than any of the other myths this is the one that blows my mind the most. When we talk about music content availability vinyl has all other mediums beaten by leaps and bounds. All one has to do is browse many of the afore mentioned online retailers to see that hot new tracks in nearly all EDM / Dance genres are being pressed to vinyl. These are not one off spoofs…its serious business. Browse http://www.juno.co.uk/ and you will see the ridiculous amounts of music available in fresh new genres all on vinyl. Granted shipping costs can be a bit of a pain but the selection is vast and available.   I would like to conclude with the reminder that vinyl is not only for those who wish to DJ on turntables. Vinyl is available to all DJs using all manor of equipment. If you choose to use a controller you can still purchase vinyl exclusives and digitize them to be played out using your laptop and controller. Fundamentally the message here is that vinyl is affordable, available and for everyone. Thank you for reading.
