I think they were, prior to the show beginning and during the beginning years. Meri wouldn’t have discussed food as she did if quality of food had not w been an issue. I’m not saying they starved their kids. But the quality of food is an issue. I get for many to even have food is a good thing but within the family it’s made clear that Meri & Mariah had different food options and a better quality of food. She says it several times in several ways.

For me, this is not ok. As I couldn’t imagine any of my kids including my step-son eating a different quality of food. At times this meant me being the better person and sacrificing whatever I needed to do he was had what my children & his dad had. I would do it again in a heart beat. Children don’t ever deserve to suffer for their parents mistakes. Mariah did get everything in which they said she did. The others did not get what she did in which they said they didn’t. As a parent that’s just fucked up.
