How difficult is hacking to learn and is it a skill I should pick up?

It’s not hard at all.....but Most importantly make sure you understand the consequences of doing things you shouldn’t be doing outside of a controlled environment.

Since nobody is pointing this out, there’s different types of “hacking”. It’s not always just the classic sitting in front of a computer typing code thing that’s shown in movies and TV shows. I got a bachelors degree in cyber security and obviously there were classes on intrusion. I, literally in 4 years, never had to or thought about learning a new programming language.

If you don’t want to learn any programming languages you really don’t have to. The topic is so wide that you have allot of areas you can try. You absolutely have to understand networking if you are doing anything where you don’t have physical access to the system so start there. Maybe check out “Network+” videos on YouTube from Professor Messer so to get familiar. You should also learn how to use Virtual Machines(VMware) how to set the one up. That will be your controlled environment that you can mess around with. You can even set up multiple VMs on your own computer and practice intrusion.

Also there are different stages to intrusion and different tools used throughout those stages. You may find something you like doing and you can focus on getting really good at that one thing. there were people in my graduating class who liked analyzing network traffic and chose to focus on that specific area(wireshark etc). I personally prefer the intelligence gathering parts. So many things to try, so try a little bit of everything.

Also Humble bundle has a bundle with a ton of cyber security books. Some of those books is solid, so give that a look. 5 days left on it I believe.

Good luck, just remember the things we do in the virtual world have consequences in the real world.
