How is diversity our strength if we get mad at cultural appropriation?

No, “appropriation” was coined as part of post-colonial studies to describe when colonizers (primarily white Europeans, Americans, Australians - but Japanese as well) used sacred items from colonized peoples’ cultures.

The ur-example is wearing a Sioux war bonnet as a fashion accessory. The war bonnet is a ceremonial item only worn by those who earn it.

To put this in contemporary terms, wearing a war bonnet without having earned it is like wearing a Purple Heart without having earned it. In the US, it is illegal to profit through use of military decoration you have not earned.

So, the thing is, if you think about it, the concept is self-evident and clearly wrong. Using ceremonial items that you have no right to is wrong, or at least unethical. There is no question that it is inappropriate.

I personally think the concept is useful for discussing non-sacred-but-important cultural practices of any minority group (e.g, black American culture). But I’m happy to hear a CMV on that.

Appropriation is never good - you’re thinking of cultural diffusion, the natural process by which cultures spread. That is normal and, well, neither good nor bad. It’s just human nature.
