How does one actually study French?

You are not horrible at languages in fact your English is great :) Your story is similar to mine. Years ago I took two years of French at a local college thinking all I had to do is go to class every day, complete all the assigned homework, and in two years I'd be fluent in the language. Don't make that mistake. In my opinion what you need to do more than anything is practice using the language, whether that is speaking, reading, listening or writing. Active skill like writing and especially speaking are the hardest aspects of language learning.

At the moment I'm trying to rectify my past mistakes studying French by doing a listen and repeat course called Glossika, and by doing a lot of listening to dialogues. I feel I am making good progress. I plan on getting an online teacher to practice speaking with when I am done with Glossika in a couple months.
