How does one know they are on the right path of Islam?

We have to keep in mind that there's a spectrum of acceptable belief systems. Sunni Islam is huge and it includes Sufis

Hadith of the 73 sects tells us only one insulin the path, the one that holds the same beliefs as the Sahaba.

Everyone that claims Sunnism has a wide set of different beliefs, so general 'Sunnism' is not being specific enough when they have major differences in some if the fundamentals.

The Sahaba could not have believed on multiple contradictory beliefs at the same time, which is the implication if your statement even though you don't believe that.

That answer to the brother's question is du'a, sincerity, and knowledge. Allah will guide that person to the path of the Sahaba.
