How does one escape tunnel vision?

You are trying to break a chain at the strongest link. Without quick attention, there is little space for cutting it at strong moments of attraction. Maybe you can actually do this eventually, once you have done a very strong inspiring visualization for long periods(example - how a very wise being, a boddhisattva who has practiced and helped people for thousands of years, would act in such a situation). Then you can activate this visualization which cuts through fear of failure and desire. Also, the advice of waiting it out with some tactic is actually good. People talk about being focussed, but detaching from some focus is also a skill (Vivekananda talks about this).

However, a simpler step is to focus on the other links in the chain.

You have done something good here - namely a description of one step in the process, its quality, symptoms and examples. What is missing - a description of the other steps. Parts of your daily routine, thoughts/feelings which casually drift you towards the stronger link. Becoming aware(some will be obvious, some require more attention to bring to the foreground) and doing simple practices to play(not anything forceful, initially) with these impulses. Example - deliberately going near fridge or table and come back without eating anything.

Making resolutions also acts as a small deterrent against automatically following impulses. Figure out and experiment with small resolutions for next day or next few hours both positive(working on X) and restriction based(not doing Y).
