How do you effectively multiclass? [QUESTION]

It depends on what you want to achieve.

Are you wanting to get as many ASI's/Feats as possible? You may want to look at putting 8 levels into Fighter for that extra choice.

Want a hard hitting, almost self healing tank? Take a Barbarian to level 3 and choose Path of the Totem Warrior. The bear totem spirit grants resistance to almost all damage while raging! The take at least 2 levels as a Druid, choosing Circle of the Moon. Now you can change into an animal as a bonus action, activate Rage and then enjoy damage resistances! Animal form almost at 0HP? Burn a spell slot and use a bonus action to heal while raging! Out of spell slots? Change back to human as a bonus action, then next turn use THAT bonus action to use Wild Shape again! BOOM, animal for is fully healed! We Animorphs now, boys!

Playing a Monk? Consider 5 levels in Rogue! You'll have Uncanny Dodge lets you use your reaction to halve any damage! Once you max level, you'll be a level 15 Monk, level 5 Rogue. Playing a Centaur? Well that means you'll have a walking movement speed of 65 feet! Take Way of the Shadow with your Monk and you'll be able to teleport to any shadow within 60ft! Hit fast, hit hard!

Want to get weird? Level 1 Barbarian with at least 13 CHAR, then at level 2 take a levl in Sorcerer and choose Draconic Origins. Now you have scales and an AC of 13+DEX. Now take 13 more levels as a Totem Warrior Barbarian. Take the Bear Spirit for the resistances. Then at take Aspect of the Wolf to move stealthily at normal speed. Finally, for Totemic Attunement, choose Eagle. Now when you rage, you have a flying speed equal to your walking speed. Focus on increasing your DEX and WIS and INT until all are at least 13.

If your DM is allowing Unearthed Arcana material, you can multiclass a third time into Mystic. At level 1 you want to choose Order of the Awakened. You now have access to three Disciplines. The first you want is Intellect Fortress, since the Psychic Focus will give you resistance to psychic damage. Now when you rage you will have resistance to ALL damage. It also doesn't require concentration and is not listed as a spell. You can use it while raging. FINALLY you can multiclass a fourth time into Monk. The last 4 levels are fun. Take Way of the Soul Knife. You now have psychic damage dagger on command.

Oh, and remember that "Fly as fast as you walk" part? As long as you aren't wearing armor, your movement speed increases by 20ft. Picture it. A hulked out, flying Centaur with dragon scales, resistant to all damage, wielding mind daggers. Flying at 60ft/turn. Oh, and you have Slow Fall as a Monk now. And Deflect Missiles. And all your unarmed attacks as well as attacks with your mind daggers use DEX instead of STR for your attack and damage rolls. Out of Rage? Now that you're a Monk you can combine Flurry of Blows with Extra Attack and make 4 attacks per turn.

You'll get 4 ASI's over the course of the journey, three will likely be spent boosting your DEX, WIS & INT, the final one you'll be able to use on whatever stat or feat you desire.

TL;DR

Multiclassing means you sacrifice later level perks for Rule of Cool shenanigans.
