How far ahead is too far ahead when it comes to reading?

I was always at least a week ahead during 1L. Usually closer to 2. But this depends on how well you can remember cases that you read 10 days ago, not in order to avoid sounding like a moron on a cold call, but to take effective notes. You have to understand what the rule of the case is saying in order to understand the nuances of your Professor's opinion on it. If you can't do this by reading ahead, then don't read ahead. I tried to do one class on Saturday before football started and then three on Sunday. Probably averaged 15 or so hours each weekend of studying so not a ton, especially when you don't have to read during the week. Then, reading during the week for the following week felt like I was pulling out ahead and freeing up my weekend which felt like really nice motivation.
