How do you feel about media literacy?

Would you have a suggestion for another sub I might have better luck in?

All very good points!

I’m not for forcing children to hear any topics, much less political ones (Forgive the example, perhaps it was a bit too serious?), but I am for providing access to the tools and resources needed to be a well rounded citizen.

I believe your point on our school systems is unfortunately the root of the problem. Though I’m passionate about media literacy specifically, I’m also a huge proponent for raising teachers wages and raising the quality of education.

The situation I spoke of earlier was actually myself. My parents never went through the proper state programs for homeschooling, so technically I never went through school and had to get a GED to attend college. I had never even written an essay. I only passed most of my math classes because my wife (girlfriend at the time) was kind enough to spend the time to teach me - I’m not here to complain, I’m just saying I have first hand experience, and I want to have some effect on changing it.

I’m not saying a specific class would have changed any of that. But I am saying there’s a chance - and an even bigger chance that if parents are media literate, their kids will be too.

I worked in fast food through college, and had the pleasure of working with several teachers over the years, most working second or third jobs just to survive. It’s a tough world, I know. I’m trying to start the conversation, and not really sure how to do that.
