How do you fit in exercise into busy daily life?

It's very do-able but yes, it has to be a priority. And once you get in a routine it's really enjoyable.

Work 40 hours a week, some weekends (IT).

I have four young kids so dinner is 6-7ish and bedtime routine takes from 7-8:30 when all is said and done.

  • Mon - run 5-~6am, work 7:30/8am-4/4:30pm, regular evening activity after dinner

  • Tue - work 7am-4pm, gym 4:30-6/6:30

  • Wed - run 5-~6am, work 7am-4pm, free evening (yay!) just started this last week, for the past year I did gym 4:30-6/6:30

  • Thur - work 7am-4pm, gym 4:30-6/6:30

  • Fri - run 4/4:30-~6am (long run), work 8am-5pm, family evening

  • Sat - gym 8:30-10:30

  • Sun - gym 10am-12pm afternoon food prep of my week's breakfast veggies and lunch salads (w/o dressing, I add that in during mornings)

My runs are not usually entire hours, depending on how much I do I'll wake up when I need to. So if I have a 3 mile run scheduled I'll wake up at 5:20 to get on the treadmill by 5:30.

I often sleep in my sports bra and shorts so I just have to put on socks and shoes in the am.

I start the skillet and my veggies in the morning while doing my hair. The skillet heats and starts to grill the veggies (sometimes bacon/sausage) while I dry my hair. When I'm done drying I stir veggies, then quick flatiron. Take veggies off, add egg whites for omelet. Go back and do makeup. Done. Usually my eggs and veggies are done and I then I prepare my carb (oatmeal, toast, whatever).

I only wash my hair 4 days a week (it's long and using dry shampoo on days I don't run seems to work fine, I just bun it or pull into a low ponytail - it's professional enough).

I have a treadmill (YES wow have we used this investment for the past year - it's a lot easier to do than get a sitter or go to the gym to get runs in!)

My husband takes care of laundry and most grocery shopping, but I usually need to do a grocery haul on Sunday mornings to get fresh veggies for the week. And I do my household chores (bathrooms, organizing) on Sundays.

No, I don't have a rest day right now but my Wed run is usually fairly short and just intervals and I have become a crazy creature of habit. My body wakes up early now anyway so I figure it's easier to get the run in at that time vs. lying awake and trying to jam the run in on the weekends (which are crazy with four kids and soccer, social engagements, and household projects/chores.)

I think a lunch hour workout would work well for you, as long as you get cleanup stuff (hair/shower) figured out. I think working out in the am might be what you need to do. At 6pm I am toast and sometimes I've had to juggle my schedule for early am workouts and honestly, I like them much better than late afternoon workouts but the childcare doesn't work out. :(

We have been ruthless with household clutter so at night, it takes a max of 20 minutes to declutter and do a quick sweep/swift of the tiled floors and heavily used walkways and get the dishwasher loaded and kitchen countertops wiped down. If I allowed tons of toys on the first floor I wouldn't be able to person. Toys are all in the basement.
