How hard is the FE exam?

People don't fail the FE exam because they don't understand the material. They fail due to:

  • Time management. In case the timeframe/ number of questions has changed over the years, I'll leave it to you to calculate how much time they allot on average for each question, but you generally don't want to spend more than 2.5 minutes reading/ comprehending/ solving any given question. That shouldn't stress you out because the questions are designed to be solved within that approximate timeframe, but if you aren't cognizant of it, you'll struggle.

  • Not being familiar with the equation pamphlet. Some people are pretty terrible at using control-F to search for key words, and if you are one of those people then you will struggle. Practice using control-F to navigate the pamphlet/ arrive at intended sections.

  • Read the answers before calculating. I recall there being a few questions where the correct answer stood out from the available options.

And don't waste money on exam prep bullshit. The FE exam is one of the easiest exams you will ever take. These con artists know that the exam is easy, they sell you a study book, you pass, and then you recommend the book to other people thinking the book had something to do with it. Nah. Exam prep books are a huge racket and the FE exam will probably be the easiest exams you ever take. Literally.
