How do high-IQ slackers stop their destructive habits?

I suppose I have seen folks discuss nicotine in this connection.

I want to work when I feel I can make a valuable contribution, however that may be defined. For myself and others I try to press that button whenever I can.

None of this is at the object/action level yet, so I will just mention that practicing thanksgiving to people who help you can go a long way to make theirs duties easier to perform.

I also find framing something in terms of duty rather than whimsy or caprice to be liberating. That someone relies on my effort and will be limited by my product motivates me to provide something usable. The thought others depend on the result of my effort can be a sort of golden chain that makes for freedom to do a good job.

Of course this only works for things that I actually must do or that in my best nature know ought to be done. It doesn't help with bullshit, for example, which by definition is not anyone's duty.
