How important was networking in college compared to just getting your degree?

As a history major, I sneered at how little academic work I perceived people in majors like marketing, business and hospitality. I felt like the fact that they had more time to socialize was a sign of lack of rigor of those programs. Turns out socializing is a huge part of those jobs , so those people weren't wasting time as much as I thought, I was just a smug asshole.

Luckily I realized the importance of networking AFTER college and it's been working out, however I'm not in a field/trying to get into a field primarily driven by business/money . Going Greek and socializing probably helped Missy Marketing more than graduating Summa did the Hysterical Historian.
