How to get into Video Game Character Design

Do not go to Montreal if you do not speak french fluently.

While yes, technically Montreal is a more "bilingual" city than others in Quebec, your ability to speak french will be considered since your team mates are most likely going to speak french.

Also a note on the vancouver film and art school, its a private post second school and not publicly funded. This means that tution is really expensive for post secondary program in Canada.

I would suggest Toronto or New York studios. Your local city pribably has at least 1 game studio.

Do you have any artistic skill? A lot of game design and character design is communicated through art and illustrations.

You'll need to be good at sketching. If you know how to do 3D modeling too, that would also be a great asset. Build up a kick ass portfolio.

Be aware the game industry is EXTREMELY competitive!! Getting your foot in the door will be the biggest challenge. Everyone is fighting for even QA Tester roles. I would suggest building up to larger AAA studios by pairing up with a programmer to build a game, contribute to an open source game (such as on GitHub), attending game dev meetups, or applying to small indie studios. Networking will be your biggest tool to get in.

Also join local game jams!! You'll get to build something tangible you can put on a portfolio that shows teamwork, producing something under pressure, and experience.
