I had never traveled abroad my whole life, was mid 30’s and just got out of the hospital from a near death experience and had gotten my heart broken in the same year. With being extremely depressed and suicidal, I took a seasonal job with long hours and decided to work and save money to travel before I would end my sorrows. Best decision I ever made. I traveled to NZ for a month, but was in such a terrible mental haze at the time, I didn’t get the whole experience, but the seed was planted. I came back home rejuvenated and resumed my therapy and all that, worked odd jobs until the same seasonal job came up again and jumped at the chance again. And went back again for a full 90 day holiday, hiked 200+ miles, 5 tracks, 5 tattoos, drove from Queenstown to Bay of Islands, made many friends and got back my will to live.
