How long should you be accountable for an action you've committed or How much past 'good' should a bad action negate if done in the present?

What I think needs to happen is that people need to realize that comedians make fun of everyone, and not get so bent out of shape when the cannon turns in their direction. Just because a comedian makes a joke about a specific race/gender/religion doesn't mean they're prejudiced against that specific group, they're just using that as part of their bit. Some of the funniest content I've seen coming from comedians utilize stereotypes to make the joke land well.

The big thing that I want to comment on is this part of your comment.

"but their critics should."

The entertainment industry is nice in that you're not forced to patronize (First definition) anything that you don't like. I will always side the the content creator for their freedom to create whatever they want, since the patron is given the freedom to patronize/consume whatever they want. Patrons "vote" with their money, which gives the creator(s) feedback and a way to continue living.

When people that likely had no intention of patronizing a specific form of entertainment start criticizing the creator and calling them prejudiced and having people dogpile on them, then you're getting running into a large problem.

You can have a very vocal minority making a huge stink about something that offended twenty people, have those people start calling the content creator misogynistic(for example), and the whole thing could very rapidly explode the content creator losing their job. Social media only exaggerates and speeds up the process, especially when people try to get as much attention as possible, even if the post being spread isn't even true!
