How Many Hours per Year?

Got this from /u/fizzix_is_fun posted in response to my request over at /r/exjew (sorry /u/fizzix_is_fun if you dislike this I will remove it immediatly) and this is their text copy/pasted

I did an AMA on /r/exmormon once, would do one again if interested. Indoctrination in Judaism varies wildly based on which denomination you belonged to. On one end you have the reclusive Hassidic sects where the students are taught nothing but Judaic studies. They are not even taught English (only Yiddish/Hebrew/Aramaic). TVs, radios, and internet access are banned. At the other end you have the Reform/Reconstructionist movements, where you might attend a religious school for a couple hours every weekend. Personally, I grew up somewhere in the middle in a denomination called "Modern Orthodox" (MO). The idea behind the movement is to live a life completely following traditional Jewish law (called Halacha) while still participating in the modern world. IMO, this denomination has a lot of overlap with mainstream Mormonism. Both have one day of the week that is sacrosanct, limit interactions with outside society through food/drink prohibitions, and like sending off individuals to an "indoctrination camp" right after high school. In MO Judaism, they go study at a right-wing yeshiva, or religious school, for a year. Anyway, to answer your question. In my elementary school days were split half and half between religious and secular studies. That made the days longer for sure. In elementary school days would go from 7:30 to 4, and in high school from 7:30 to 5:30. About an hour of each day was reserved for prayer in addition. In addition, Saturday prayers were longer, and you generally spent from 8:30-12:00 or so in shul, maybe arriving a little later when young. So you're looking at 1804 = 720 hours of school, and 523 ~= 150 hours for saturday service bringing us up to about 870 hours a year. Add in about 30 for holidays, and 900 hours a year for religious indoctrination.
