As a someone who has a laissez-faire driven political view in normal times I think you are blaming Trump a bit too much.

There isn't a single person I personally will trust in any government to sign off on this vaccine to get me to take it in the first round I am eligible for. The risks of complications for a new virus are part of the concern but I don't believe that anyone is so level headed that they could make the right call under these pressures to make the right call for me as an individual.

The world economy is on hold and the economy that is the fastest at getting back to normal with mass manufacturing of a vaccine will see some substantial long term rewards.

There are people going into debt or worse, people who are becoming homeless, and people who are missing out on key moments for their social development. How could I entirely trust any politician or scientist to properly weight my individual desire for side effect free vaccines against all of that? No matter who they are some bias will get in.
