How do moderates keep this up?

"Secular Muslim" here.

For a lot of us here in America, there's just nothing to be gained by transitioning from non-religious Muslim, to explicit atheist/ex-Muslim. A lot of us are able to do whatever we want anyway (girls, partying, etc.), and can still maintain good ties with our family/friends/community.

I'm well aware of the issues in Islam (scientific errors in Quran, questionable morality, etc.), and have no interest in engaging in apologia for it. But I'm also not anti-Islam. I have no animosity towards it or Muslims; its shaped me in ways I am eternally grateful for.

I realize this is a specific situation for me. A lot of people (especially in the Muslim World), don't have such a fluffy history with Islam, and for them, may be a source of traumatic experience. I sympathize with that.

There's also a feeling among most secular-Muslims that the very concept of "ex-Muslims" has been co-opted by the neoconservatives, and now serves as mouthpieces justifying Western hegemony against Muslims globally. We have no interest in being sellouts.
