How much does uniqueness matter to you in music? (another one of my walls of text)

Uniqueness is not something I actively seek out in music, but I really appreciate it, and most of the music I listen to is probably really unique. I'm glad you talked about the people who try something first and it's usually not the best but other people come in and make it better. I listen to a lot of california reggae (white boy reggae) and sublime is the band that fits that description to a tee. People think I love sublime bc of the genre I like but honestly a lot of big bands since them have done things so much better and there are only a few sublime songs I enjoy.

Bands that I really like who have done things different are no doubt, hyper crush, rebelution, and dance Gavin dance.

No doubt came from the ska scene and their old music before don't speak is really crazy and almost unlistenable but I love it. The horns are so catchy and gwens voice is really weird so uniqueness is one of the only redeeming qualities

Hyper crush is kinda like lmfao circa 2008 and they had this whole "bringing the 80s back" and always wore neon and made hip hop about old video games. Annoying but super unique

Rebelution is one of the white boy reggae bands that wouldn't be here without sublime, but are a million times better. They are also more heavily influenced by island reggae

Dance Gavin dance gets put into the sceney bopper category but if you listen to the music it doesn't fit there bc it's so unique. The guitarist is crazy talented and writes shit just to show off how good he is and it still sounds amazing, 1 vocalist comes from a super artistic background and approaches music like its performance art. His lyrics don't make coherent sense (don't be tardy for my leaky Barbie tv party pee in the park) and only work to fit well with the guitar or have a really crazy backstory that you can't understand by hearing it. They have been through 3 clean vocalists and are still going strong...... It's a mystery.

Generally I don't like music that I can associate strongly with a lot of other bands or I feel like I've heard stuff like it before. I get bored with music pretty easily and I always want to be hearing something new and different. 2009-2010 when techno was transitioning from lame house/trance music into cool edm and trap was a fun time because dj's were being so innovative and people were hearing things that were so different from anything before - skrillex, Steve aoki, diplo. A lot of people think death grips is super revolutionary and unique, and I like them but sound wise I don't get what's so different

I'm also not really into genre stuff because there have been so many breakdowns of genres and no possible way to keep up with all the sub genres that have spawned
