I have lived in Houston my entire life (with the exception of military service and a few college years) and agree that no matter where you live, there will be weather issues.
Live in Austin? Be prepared for storms and tornadoes. A few years back they had massive E-4 tornadoes that absolutely leveled a neighborhood. Live in Dallas? They also have tornadoes and ice storms, too. Live in Corpus, Galveston or Houston? You trade in the severe winter weather for 6 months of being on hurricane watch. You live prepared and when there is severe weather, you deal with it, just like everyone who lives on the Gulf of Mexico. I believe that every city in the US, even in Hawaii, has their own set of weather issues - you can't outrun the weather. You just learn to be prepared for it.
In 50 years, I have lost one house (due to a black mold issue because there was no power for weeks following a hurricane), one car, a bunch of trees, and replaced a few windows due to hurricanes and/or tropical storms. My swimming pool overflowed during Harvey, but that was due to 50 inches of rain - the same thing would have happened anywhere that got that kind of rain in a weekend. My neighborhood has never flooded during a hurricane, but has had water in the streets off and on during heavy rainfall. It is common here to get 10 inches of rain in a day. You just learn to live smart, pay attention to the weather, and find an uphill spot to park your vehicles.
