How Much Have Your Grades Affected Your Life?

Asked my husband:

High school grades? A little, I guess. They weren't that good in anything except math, but I was near failing in math until I decided my teachers were incompetent and I would teach myself. They were surprised when I shot to the top of the class. But I had mediocre grades in everything else, partly because I learned on the side but didn't care about my homework. But also partly because I was rude to the teachers. Like that one time about D-Day.

He was referring to a time in which, in ninth grade history, he raised his hand and then shared with the entire class, "This was one of the most monumental and dramatic days in modern history, one of the most important days of modern war, ever, more dramatic than a thousand novels -- and YOU'RE MAKING IT BORING*."

College? I don't know. I got mediocre grades in math until my professors realized I knew the stuff.

He skipped almost all math classes but aced exams. Also figured out a new proof for something.

The recommendations from my professors, and Putnam score, were good enough.

That's all he had to say.

But he's a genius, which probably means you shouldn't do what he did.
