How rescuing drowning migrants became a crime

The hate against the NGOs disgusts me to no end. To make it clear: I am against illegal migration. If you consider yourself a refugee, there is no reason to put yourself and others in danger trying to go from Turkey to Greece for example.

But the fact that a sizeable percentage of Europeans actually advocate leaving those people to drown as a "deterrent" is horrific. People keep raging about men putting their families in danger but will then gladly leave those families to die for the mistakes of the parents.

Just to make it clear: If you support leaving migrants to drown, then you should also support leaving your child, sibbling or parent to die from a theoretical overdose as a deterrent to other people as they clearly knew about the risks. But no, you would never advocate for the latter because that's YOUR relative... not some faceless child on a fucking boat hundreds of kilometers south.

Human trafficking has to stop, but not by leaving thousands of people to die. Whatever you think about the adults and their responsibility, the children didn't have any choice wether or not to board those boards and any death is one to many.

I'm not an expert but like many I'd say the best option would be to reach an agreement with some of the northern african states so potential asylumseekers and migrants can be processed and cared for in appropriate (EU-financed) facilities before having to cross the meditteranean sea.
