How robots are used in film production

Yes it’s too bad this was the example chosen to show robotics in film. A better example would be Gravity, which was shot using robot mounted cameras and actors in tilt rigs. You can see some bts footage here at about 2:30.

The software used to program the robots is the same that was being used to generate pre-vis of the special effects. This allowed them to literally plan the whole movie out ahead of time and set up shots specifically with the end composition in mind before anyone ever got to set.

This also allowed them to pull off some really great details that would be very difficult otherwise. A lot of the filming took place inside of a box that was made up of LED screens facing inward. Since they already had the pre-vis renders and knew exactly where the camera would be every frame because it was mounted on a robot, they were able to display things like the earth and the sun on the interior of the box during filming. This means that the reflection of the earth on the astronauts face shields and the direction of lighting was a practical effect and completely consistent, even when they are tumbling around. Also since they could only fit one actor at at time into this filing rig, when they had to speak to each other in a scene, there would be a face displayed on the screens where the actor should be facing and speaking to, so that when everything is composited, it looks natural.

Source: I worked for the company Bot & Dolly that made the software and rand the robots that made that film and several other really cool projects. Unfortunately the company was shut down after an acquisition, and their official Vimeo is gone, but a YouTube search will turn up some of the best stuff, like this
