How’s learning Arabic as a language at UNC?

I come from NCSSM, a high school that taught language primarily conversationally. For example, most of class time was spent with that language being spoken, by the end of the first year of intro. I feel like that style really helped me learn. Just wondering if they have that at UNC.

Also wondering how many semesters it takes for people to become relatively conversationally fluid, and what I mean by that is something like being able to have a conversation about what classes you are taking and why.

I’m interested in learning this language to help w possible service work abroad with refugee communities. Would there be volunteer opportunities to study abroad in that respect?
