How self-driving cars could determine the future of policing - "If traffic violations are mostly a thing of the past, the police won’t be able to use pretextual traffic stops anymore. They can follow self-driving cars all day but won’t be able to pull them over."

Universal basic income is the only long term solution to automation imo. If you follow automation through to it's logical conclusion we will eventually automate (almost) everything, including building and maintaining automated systems. We will be able to produce huge amounts of goods that nobody would be able to pay for, because nobody will have a job. This isn't in anyone's interest. Our whole economy and way of life is based on consuming and if nobody has the money to consume anything it will all come crashing down. If the 99% had literally no money at all the 1% would be fucked too, becasue nobody would be able to buy their shit. The only solution I see is basic income. In fact I think it is inevitable if the trend of automation continues (which it undoubtedly will), because an almost 100% unemployment rate would suck for everyone, including the few people with jobs. I am envisioning a future where all humans live in excess while almost all work is done by machines. It could be the end of many of humanity's problems. But the transition is going to suck for lots of people, because I don't think such a paradigm shift is possible until a critical mass of jobs is lost. When it's just truck drivers and stuff people aren't going to give a shit unless they're truck drivers
