How do I start?

What I'm about to post might not save you plenty, but i hope it helps. Feel free to correct and add to my post.

People attempted to buy there own cable box from hddvrtv.com and succeed. Call them first to inquire about compatibilities and whatever you can think of. Convincing cable company to activate the box can be a rigorous task, and hddvrtv staff offers their help after you buy from them. Just no on-demand support because the site's cable box all requires cablecard and cablecard cant send ongoing signal and is limited to only receiving incoming signals. This can save you up 20 dollars a month if you succeed.

Check out this link for more info.

I suppose your 200 dollar monthly bill probably also include phone? if so, consider many other voip option like ooma telo and obi200/202 devices. ooma telo limits your choice of services to their own while obihai obi200/202 allow you the freedom of many voip services, some listed here and many more are configurable to the obi units. i prefer the free google voice service hooked up to your home phone through the obi200/202 devices.

Be warn though, google voice doesnt support 911 address detection, but obi200/202 allows you to combine google voice with bulk911 service for about 12 dollar yearly. so by combining free google voice with bulk911 service, you pay just $12 per year as opposed to optimum's 40 dollar per month phone service. How that work is you can set all outgoing 911 emergency calls through bulk911 line and all other calls through google voice line.

If your mom have phone set up around the house, you can still use obi200/202 and still do extension to phone far away for obi200/202, but that will take some effort like wiring the wall phone jacks to interconnect with each other.

If you need to port your home number to google voice. consider these option here and here. Or you can just skip all the hassle of burner phone prepaid plan porting to google voice and just pay $60/year for phonepower through obihai portal obitalk, which is accessable after you buy and activate obi200/202.

For easier extension, consider ooma telo with add-ons like linx, a wireless extension unit. IMO the ooma is far more convient but equipment is pricey and monthly cost varies from few dollar to 40 depending on your needs.

I listed all these because they help me save and I enjoy cord-cutting. Hope you can at least save with these methods.
