How do you stay positive?

3 things

  1. Remembering it can always be worse

Shit got real for me a couple years ago. Girlfriend from England (I'm in US) who turned out to have a mental disorder decided to get herself pregnant without telling me. Having a son is amazing actually, but having an ex who does whatever she can to alienate him from me and constantly forces me to incur court costs to see my son under reasonable conditions is one of the most painful things I've ever experienced.

  1. Meditation

Not the first one to mention it. Slowing own actually helps me speed up. When I'm more in control of my mind and emotions I make fewer mistakes (which includes the mistake of letting my mind wander).

  1. Re-framing the problem

A bit of a hybrid of the first two, but definitely it's own thing and arguably the most important here.

The cliche would be "seeing the silver lining." You may also call it stoic optimism (#3 really came to me between a combination of Ryan Holiday's "The Obstacle is the Way" and seeing a psychologist who was helping me to express gratitude).

Here's how I see it: starting/running a business is hard. If it was easy, everyone would do it and eventually someone would start doing it cheaper until it was hard to make a business of it (i.e. profit margins shrinking). So, when I experience a problem, I tell myself, "If I overcome this, it's just one more hurdle my competitors have to jump to catch me."

I tell myself that no one builds a business trouble-free and it's part of the job. Being confronted with these issues is not the end of the world, but rather an opportunity to propel myself further ahead.

To go back to how it ties to #1 and #2...it's a more optimistic version of #1 because I'm seeing it as a gain as opposed to a lack of a loss. #2 is about calming my mind, but #3 actually prevents my mind from getting stressed in the first place, meaning there's less of a need for #2.

I can elaborate more if you'd like more context,
