How to get through the Fourth of July week

I bought the Sony 1000 XM3 headphones at Best Buy yesterday. They're good for a lot of things, but they're not as good as I hoped they were. I didn't hear fireworks wearing them yesterday, but it doesn't block out everything. Most of the annoying Car Stereo Bass has been blocked, but not all. One car passed by earlier today and it sounded like I was be shocked by jolt of electricity. It was annoying and disappointing. At times when I'm in the living room I don't hear anything, but I have the sound at 70% and playing multiple audio streams. If I wanted to relax and watch the news at 50% audio, I will hear noises like cars passing by bumping bass. I'm still on the fence about returning them or not. They do work, but it's strange how they work. At times it seems to me they work better than other times. They're supposedly the best noise cancelling headphones. Yes, they're good, but my specific trigger is Stereo Bass and it doesn't block out all of it.

Also, one reason I bought the headphones was to not play music so loud and give my ears a rest. I could mask like 99% of noises with standard headphones if I play the music loud enough, so I wonder if I'm better off with cheaper headphones and save myself the premium price. If the headphones could block out all my triggers and I would only have to play audio at 30-50% I would say they're worth the premium price.
