How to know when an idea is stupid?

To me it's like this:

An idea either works or it doesn't. The way you figure out whether it works or not is to scrutinize it and see if it holds (is it consistent?, ie is it "True", at least theoretically?).

Now assuming the idea is consistent, whether or not it is useful depends on its interaction with your (or other people's) ideas, and that you can't actually predict well. Something you think is useless might somehow be useful later on, and whether or not your idea ends up being useful depends on the system it lives in.

But my "solution" is to just not disregard any idea unless it's broken (not consistent), even stupid-sounding ones.
