How is the work load for Chinese 1y?

[–]evanshall 2 points 1 day ago  Don't worry about your GPA so much. permalinksavereportgive goldreply [–]x_lab_subject 2 points 1 day ago  Language classes are a lot of work. It's 5 units and 5 times a week, often with attendance being part of your grade. One of my friends in engineering took Spanish 3 last semester, and said it was the most time-consuming class he took. But if you are genuinely interested, I would say go for it, with foreign languages (particularly large ones like Mandarin) being generally good things to learn. The requirement for 1Y is "were born in a non-Chinese speaking country but were raised in a home where a non-Mandarin Chinese dialect was spoken but cannot speak Mandarin and possess little or no reading and writing skills in Chinese," so you are fine. If this is your first semester here, you may want to hold off on it until you've gotten an idea of college workload. permalinksavereportgive goldreply [–]Kanzu5665 1 point 1 day ago  Hallo, I have taken 10X and 100XA. (I skipped 1X) First, take the online placement test to see where you qualify. If you place too high, you cannot take 1Y. Also, to address a potential concern, the curriculum for the X and Y series are the same. You both use the book Oh, China! (The X and Y class merge in 100XA) It's a fair amount of work, depending on how good your Chinese is. I also had little reading/writing experience so I would need to spend 2-3 hours a day doing homework. There's HW everyday and it meets 4 times a week. I think you may want to take it at some point though. Also, I dropped 100XB this semester (planning on taking it next semester). I'm taking three technical bioengineering courses but for me, Chinese took the most time. (Does vary depending on prior experience) feel free to ask questions. permalinksavereportgive goldreply

Oh, I will put off taking this class then. 2-3 hours a day?! Not in my cards right now. Thanks for answering.
