How would Americans react if the democratic will of the people wasn't respected by politicians after a vote or referendum?

They would express outrage online. Some of them would "take to the streets" because there is a cultural narrative that politicians care about people "taking to the streets" or demonstrations or marches (they don't.)

As with Occupy Wall Street, such protests would be ignored, while those who get off on outrage would continue to type about it online incessantly, and we'd be on to the next outrage.

I think most people want politics to work like Amazon.com where you can change things from the comfort of your own apartment. I think actual change happens when you leave the house and do the the grunt work to get candidates elected.

Most Americans are unwilling to do that. Because they're "busy."
