How do you write about something you don't know much about?

Will definitely go and lurk some military forums and go to a recruitment centre to see if I can maybe get some help, thats great advice, thank you.

My dad had to his mandatory 2 years of military service in the Soviet Army from 1989 to 1991, my grandfather, my great uncles, my great grandmother and great grandfather, etc. fought for the Red Army during the Second World War. I grew up listening to all kinds of war stories from how my relatives goofed off in their spare time to how their first experiences in combat, and I've been able to apply most of what I've heard and learned from their stories to this screenplay. I am just having trouble with this specific scene mainly because the character I am writing about doesn't feel like he fits in the story anymore. Despite him going through the kind of things similar to what my relatives went through, he ends up sounding more like me instead of my relatives.
