Humans as a species are going to gain weight to protect ourselves

You know, I have thought before about how we, as a species, would be pretty damn defenseless if it weren't for our higher-order cognitive capabilities. Those capabilities have, of course, made us arguably better at surviving than the vast majority of species. I'm laying in a comfy bed in an artificially heated bedroom surrounded by a ceiling and walls that protect me from most things that would try to harm me and a few feet from a fridge containing food from the grocery store. But at the same time, as someone who definitely would have been homeless a few times without parental financial help, you can't argue that any of that is the same as having a built-in coat and claws.

What I have never thought is, "Gee, maybe stuffing our faces with excessive amounts of artery-clogging processed foods is the solution to this problem we've all been waiting for."
