It hurts my head knowing that less than 10% of the world is atheist. I cannot fathom believing in something without proof.

I mean, yeah there could be. Not some magical being (or old man in the sky), but a creator of sorts yeah.

Some things would make a lot of sense if we were in some form of simulation or hologram. From whatever started the big bang to the genesis of life, some sort of external force could account for the absolutely astronomical odds of either happening organically.

Much like "aliens" which many of you propose to be a statistical guarentee, because if we exist, so should something else. But that viewpoint is taken from what could be an extreme outlier.

The fact is odds and likelihoods are not proof of anything. I can roll a die a thousand times and still not be guaranteed to roll a 6. It's best to be objective in the face of lack of true evidence. Measure what we know, not what is likely. That's the scientific process. Making hypotheticals and then verifying (or disproving) them with hard evidence.

So, in the same sense you hypothesize aliens, I hypothesize a creator. Both are wishful thinking. Maybe that's all a "belief" is. Wishful thinking. You can go about believing whatever you want to believe, as can I. Chances are, our paths will never cross again and therefore nothing I believe will ever directly affect you and vice versa.

Both beliefs have philosophical weight if they were to be true. I like to believe in a creator as a comfort that makes my everyday easier, that makes losing people I love easier. Even if I'm wrong, so long as I am not intruding on someone else's freewill or no longer enjoying my life because of my beliefs, I will have lost nothing whether my viewpoint is right or wrong.

If my belief is a benefit to myself, my mental health, and overall wellbeing, who's to say that it is wasteful? If life is meaningless and all for nothing, then perhaps something that makes what little time we have easier on ourselves is of positive benefit. As a person who has struggled with depression, existentialism, and loss, if a certain belief system makes me happier and helps me overcome those nagging thoughts, then isn't that the best thing for me from even an atheistic standpoint?

It's not as though embracing atheism makes your outcome any different than an atheists. And, to be Frank, most atheists are just as insufferably preachy as some religions. This whole sub is a circlejerk of people who think they're smarter than everyone else because they watched a Carl Sagan interview.

Like, who cares? You're smarter. Good job. You win the big golden prize. This post is even evidence of that. Like *"ooh, I dissed the big man in the sky. People dumb. Haha. Me smart." *

Good for you, I guess?
