I'm from a culture where arranged marriages are the standard. At around 18 I had a "friend" who was older (late 20s) who was looking for a wife and would speak with me about the progress he was making. He had already been married and quickly divorced due to major incompatibilities and mental health issues.

I noticed that most of the girls he was considering/was talking to were much younger and I asked him why he wasn't looking at women his age or who may have already been divorced. He said "any man would prefer a 19 year old". I was so grossed out by his comment. I was really naive to the way things were up until that point but I reamed him out for his comment and never spoke to the loser again.

I realized more over the years that your comment is absolutely true. They admit it themselves often, that they prefer younger so they can mould her into who they want, ie manipulate them. If they could marry 14 year olds they would (and do, in many parts of the world).

I just wish healthy relationships were the cultural/societal goal rather than just having a relationship as some sort of symbol. A lot less people would be hurt, especially women and children.
